About this place

The Vallée des Cailles is home to beautiful calcareous grasslands managed by the Conservatoire d'Espaces naturels de la région Centre. An exceptional site recognised as a regional nature reserve, where magnificent orchids flourish in an almost Mediterranean atmosphere. Unmarked trail.| A small enclave to the east of the Forêt de Dreux, the Vallée des Cailles has beautiful calcareous grasslands and woodlands set within a dry valley on the edge of the state forest. The grasslands were once maintained by grazing, which gradually disappeared in the early 1980s. On the slopes, the limestone has allowed a distinctive flora and fauna to thrive. This place is a true ecological haven in which three different environments can be observed: the forest edge, the centre of the grassland, and the copses and hedgerows. In May, the south-facing grasslands buzz with insects of all kinds. Hoverflies, bumblebees, and solitary bees flit from flower to flower. It is not uncommon to see the agile lizard basking in the sun. Dogs allowed on a lead.
