Lac du Salagou — Hérault

About this place

An artificial lake with red and ochre banks, perched among the extinct volcanoes of the Languedoc, the Salagou is one of the most singular landscapes in France. Its brick-coloured rufolite soils, its volcanic hillocks and its deep blue waters create an absolutely unique Martian-like scenery. Dogs swim on beaches of red rock and coloured pebbles, in waters that are seldom crowded outside July and August, with views over the volcanic organ pipes of the Guilhaumard.
