Dune Du Pilat

About this place
The tallest sand dune in Europe, the Dune du Pilat rises with its 55 million cubic metres of sand between the Landes forest and the ocean, in the commune of La Teste-de-Buch. The climb to the ridge rewards you with a view that takes in the Arcachon sandbank on one side and the vast expanse of pines on the other. Your dog is welcome for this great outdoor walk, but bear in mind there is no shade on the sand and the ascent can be demanding in the heat.

Reported hazards
In strong heat, the dune sand becomes scorching and can burn paw pads within minutes — go early in the morning or late in the day instead. There is no shade or water supply on site, so bring plenty of water for your dog. The climb through soft sand is exhausting, so take it easy with an older, overweight, or heart-fragile dog. If you head down towards the ocean side, watch out for currents and baïnes (rip channels), which are dangerous even for strong swimmers.
